Outcasts Start 2013 with Two Wins in T’heim

By Darren McKellep
Lade Field, 4 May 2013, clear and cool:

Game 1, Outcasts warm up slowly, finish strong

The Pretender Outcasts took on the Knickers of NTNUI in a double-header to begin their NBL season. In Game 1 the Knickers came out swinging aggressively and roughed up SP Darren in the first two innings, scoring 5 runs on 4 hits, 2 errors and a walk. But Darren and the Outcast defense settled down and held NTNUI to just 2 earned runs over the next 4 innings. Meanwhile, Outcast bats finally warmed up in the 3rd inning, tying the score at 5-5, then plating 6 runs in the 4th to blow the game open. The final score was 22-8.
The difficult gravel field conditions made every groundball an adventure, while fielders also had to contend with the Trondheim cold when making their throws.
Darren slapped 4 hits and Matt added 3 of his own... Catcher Kelly and OF Efrain each scored 4 runs, and every Outcast player scored as well... 1B Florentino and Darren drove in 3 runs apiece.

Game 2, Matt Dominates from mound and plate
SP Matt was unquestionably the player of the game in the second contest, pitching the complete-game win and driving in 6 RBIs on 4 hits. Again, the Knickers struck early with 2 runs in the first frame. Matt nearly sacrificed his pitching hand to end the first inning by reflexively slapping down Alek’s rocket comebacker, then throwing to 1B for the out. Matt’s palm was bruised and tender but his fingers were evidently unaffected as he gutted out 5 innings, striking out 8 and allowing no more runs.
SS Kelly and 1B Florentino provided offense with 3 hits each. Both Flore and 2B Mathias drove in 3 runs.  Catcher Darren scored 4 times and Efrain, Kelly and Matt all scored thrice.

Rookie dynamo OF Raul wasted no time in getting his first hits as a Pretender, with two hits in each game from the leadoff spot, scoring 4 times... Mathias’ clutch singles drove in 5 RBIs, 3 of them with two outs... Efrain, 3B Erik Sv. and Mathias each logged 3 hits on the day... Rookie Carsten scored his first run as a Pretender in Game 1...
