Last-chance Heroics: Leif’s Homer Clinches NBL Series in Extras

In one of Norwegian baseball history’s most tense games ever, it was a spectacular 2-run, walk-off home run that propelled the Oslo Pretenders over the ØHIL Royals. With two outs in the bottom of the 8th, Leif Petter Sandvik’s tremendous shot gave Glenn Wells the complete-game win. Glenn struck out 4, walked 3 and plunked 2 batters.

The regulation 7 innings had ended in a scoreless tie, testimony to the dominant pitching and solid, errorless defense of both teams. ØHIL’s starter Chris Abrahamsen, after having just scored the game’s only run in the 8th, took the mound to close out the contest. C Terje Hoaas led off with a walk but...

Pretenders on their knees after getting hit twice by the Cheese Eaters

Osterøy
After a great last-inning-performance versus the Royals earlier in the same week to reclaim the top spot in the 1st division, the Pretenders went to the west-coast to battle against the Cheese-Eaters for a three-game-series. But with only 8 players they fell short to an aggressive hitting machine. With two loses they gave away their lead in the division and are now in need of a win against the Royals to manage to capture the League title in the last showdown next week.

Pretenders defeat Royals in final-inning comeback

Rud Field, Tuesday, 05 August 2008:
In a close contest in which every run proved critical, SP Glenn Wells pitched 4 and 2/3 innings to keep his Pretenders in striking range. Glenn struck out 4 and scattered 8 hits, but tired in the 5th and walked 3 consecutive batters (2 more walks than he surrendered in all of 2007). RP Kazuhiko Yamada took the mound with his squad down 4-2 with the bases loaded and two outs. The Japanese control artist pounded the strike zone with his consistent fastball and mean hook. Kaz got the final 7 outs, allowing just one run.

P2 Eclipse of the Suns

On Saturday P2 squared up against the Kristiansand Suns for the first time ever. Kristiansand is the other new addition to the league this season, and came to Rud ready to play P2 in their second game ever in NBL. In their first, they had lost to Tåfis aka “los cubanos”.

Their duel with P2 would only worsen their record (PS this report was written without the benefit of available scorecard, so it is recreated based on the reporter's [sometimes dubious] memory).

Sandvika, Bærum
The Oslo Pretenders held their annual Hall of Phame party this past Saturday to celebrate Shaq and Mark as their 5th and 6th members of the Oslo Pretenders Hall of Phame. The party took place at Darren's Party House in Sandvika as the club had a nice BBQ party for the guest of honor.

The party started after the 2nd P-League of the season. The Infidels beat the Redfox 10-6 and both teams are now tied with a 1-1 record for the season.

P2 Stings BI, Takes Series

P2 beat BI comfortably in their second meeting this season and won the series between the two teams 2 games to none.

In their second meeting of the season, P2 decided not to overrun BI, but to let the bats do the speaking. Unfortunately, BI was only able to field 7 players, so the outcome was pretty much set before the game.

Death threat stopped Leif's home-run chase in another Pretenders win

Rommen, Oslo
As Leif hit his 16th lifetime home-run in the previous game against Osterøy, all eyes were on Leif in the local match-up vs. the Alligators. With a home-run in this game, Ultra-Leif would have tied for first place with Glenn. However Leif received a letter right before the game started that shocked the entire club.

It was obvious that the person behind this letter meant serious business.

P2 Beats Øhil in Close Game

In a well played, close game, P2 beat Øhil 5-3. The team was able to pull off the victory due to two main things: Kaz’ excellent pitching and patience at the plate.

Kaz pitched a complete game, striking out 13(!!!!) walking only 2(!!!!!), mixing speed and movement which kept the Øhil batters guessing (wrong) throughout the game. Only one of his runs were earned.

Rommen, Oslo
The Pretenders showed no mercy (until the 5th inning) as they smacked their way to victory over the Cheese-eaters from the west coast, beating the Osterøy team 18-3 on a sunny day at Rommen field.

Ultra-Leif hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 3rd inning to tie the legendary Bob at 2nd place for most home-runs ever for a Pretender in Norway with 16. He is now only one shy of tying the blast-leader Glenn. In addition he also collected his 30th win in Norway.

Pretenders Win Season Opener

Rommen, Oslo
The Oslo Pretenders got off to a great start this season as they beat the ØHIL Royals (formerly known as Bekkestua Dragons) 7-4 in an exciting season-opener at sunny Rommen Field.

With several key players absent due to injuries and other not-so-related matters, there was a lot of excitement in the air before the game started. But the Pretenders have a very solid squad in 2008, and as soon as they got the lead they never looked back.

Bucharest, Romania
Some weeks ago the Baseball world was turned upside down, a mayor in a French town was revoking the rights to a baseball field for the local team The Grape Crushers, due to the fact they’re playing a sport that Americans invented. This was shocking news, the outpour of support and contributions led by Mister-Baseball.com gave the mayor no choice but to change his tune. He then declared that Baseball played in his district will now be called Balldeaux and therefore no longer have the affiliation of being an American sport.

Looking back at the great year of 2007

The year 2007 is entering its final day which means it is time to look back at another great year for the greatest ball club in Norway. 2007 is the year the Pretenders clinched their 11th League title, 13th NM title and 10th Double. P2 fought hard and ended up in 3rd place in the 2nd division and was a bad umpire decision away from a possible bronze in the NM. P1 ended a record winning streak in Norwegian baseball with 56 wins in a row.

Internationally the Pretenders crash-landed after a historic performance the year before, but overall the Pretenders had a lot to look back on both on and off the field.

Casson Leads Pretenders to NM Gold in Grand Style

(Oslo, Oct 7, 2007) Behind their newest star, August Casson, the Oslo Pretenders coasted to an 11-3 victory to capture the gold in the decisive third game of Norway’s national baseball championship series. To call Augie the hero of the game is a grand understatement. Not only did he pitch the complete-game win, he also smashed the go-ahead grand slam that sparked the Pretenders’ huge rally in the 3rd, from which Bekkestua never recovered. Though his parents named him August, his teammates are calling him Mr. October.

P1 and P2 met for their first ever match-up in the NM semi finals and P1 showed no mercy to their franchise team-mates as they brutally destroyed their confidence by winning comfortably 19-1 and 21-6 in the best-of-three semi finals. This means that the first team is off the Finals and will battle against the Bekkestua Dragons in the best of three games. P2, on the other hand, is off to the Bronze Final and will face the Tåsen Hitmen.

The Pretenders have a chance to be historic as no other club in Norway has ever won two medals in the same NM before.
